The Things Everyone Needs to Know When Travelling Around Australia

Kangaroo - BeachAustralia is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, attracting backpackers, campers and those seeking the ultimate adventure. No matter what you want from your travels in Australia, it will be one of the most memorable trips of your life.

Here are just some of the things you need to know before coming to the land down under:

Where to Go

Where to start; Australia is vast and filled with iconic landmarks, beautiful landscapes and amazing wildlife. Choose Sydney for its vibrant culture, stunning beaches and famous landmarks. Pick Melbourne for its sophisticated café and bar culture. Perth for its sunshine and laid-back lifestyle or Brisbane for its lush green spaces and lively social scene. Drive the Great Ocean Road, surf the Gold Coast, take a hike in Tasmania or dive the Great Barrier Reef. Make sure you take time out to relax on some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. Sit back, soak up the sun and scenery and check out some of the best surfing spots in the world.  If you are a creature of the night and parties and gambling are more your scene, then check out http://thetop10bestonlinecasinos.com/au for inspiration.

When to Go

Australia’s climate varies enormously, from hot in the far North to cool in the South. Many travellers choose to arrive in Australia between December and February, when it is summer for most of the country. March to May is autumn, June to August is winter and September to November is spring, so really it’s up to you to choose the time of year you want to arrive. The northern states of Australia tend to have warmer weather much of the time, whilst the southern states experience cooler winters. Remember in the peak summer season, accommodation prices will be more expensive and will be a little busier.

How to Get Around

One of the best ways to city hop in Australia is to fly. No traveller wants to be spending all their time getting from A to B and flying is the best way to cover large distances in a short space of time. Australia’s domestic airlines are affordable and serve all cities. If you’re not in a hurry and wish to take in some of Australia’s most beautiful scenery, rent a car and drive the Great Ocean Road. Stretching 151 miles along the south-eastern coast, the famous road winds its way through some stunning sights, including the famous limestone cliffs of the 12 Apostles. You’ll find car rental companies at all major airports and in city locations. Getting around each city itself is also easy with a wide selection of public transport including trains, buses, monorail and trams.

Entry Requirements

All travellers visiting Australia need a visa, except New Zealanders who receive a ‘special category’ visa on arrival. The majority of applications can be made online from Australian diplomatic missions, travel agents or the Australian government website for the Department of Immigration & Border Protection. There are many different types of visa so it is important to do your research and apply for the correct one.

One of the best things about vacationing in Australia is that you won’t get attacked by a bear – unlike what might happen if you vacation in Alaska!

I think if you fly, you miss so much. In 2012/13 I drove around Australia in a Mitsubishi Lancer on my own. I took five months but did stay extended periods with friends and family, and stayed in caravan parks/cabins. As someone who likes photography, I would have missed so much if I had been flying overhead!!! Go by car, caravan or bike I say!
