Qantas Qomes Qlean

I have to state up front that I’m a Qantas Platinum Member and consider it one of the world’s top airlines. I think this is a great way to “come clean” about any mistakes, errors or shortcomings. The worst thing that can be done is – nothing.

Recycling – not as green as you might think!

I recently traveled on a Virgin Blue flight and one of the articles stood out. We might think that recycling is simple when it’s not that that black and white. Click on the hyperlink to read about whether or not you’re as green as you’d like to think you are!

While I have you here – whenever you come across something valuable or interesting make a note of it and make sure you blog about it. In this case the CONTENT is valuable, but also the delivery mechanism – the ONLINE MAGAZINE is great don’t you think? Easy to navigate, it almost feels like reading the actual magazine… I can’t wait to read it on my new iPad!

House burns down due to scented plug-in!

Fire Prevention Tip

This photo was taken at the scene of a house fire that occurred recently. I am not sure of the source of the original message.

It seems their house burnt down.. nothing left but ashes. They had good insurance so the house will be replaced and most of the contents. That’s the good news.

However, they were sick to their stomachs when they found out the cause of the fire. The insurance investigator sifted through the ashes for several hours. He traced the cause of the fire to the master bathroom. He asked the owners if they had plugged anything in the bathroom. They listed the normal things… curling iron, blow dryer.

The investigator kept saying, ‘No, this would be something that would disintegrate at high temperatures’. Then they remembered they had a Scented Plug-In, in the bathroom.

There have been more house fires started with the plug-in type room fresheners than anything else. The plastic they are made from is THIN. In most cases there is nothing left to prove that it even existed. In this case, when the investigator looked IN the wall plug, the two prongs left from the plug-in were still in there.

The owners of the house mentioned they had one of the plug-ins with a small night light built in it. They had noticed that the light would dim and then go out. They would walk in to the bathroom a few hours later and the light would be back on again.

The investigator said that the unit was getting too hot and would dim and go out rather than just blow the light bulb. Once it cooled down, it would come back on. That’s a warning sign

, but you know what? I’d just avoid the risk altogether and not use a plug-in air freshener!

U.N. Survey

Last month, an important a world survey was conducted by the UN. The only question asked was:
“Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?”

The U.N. Survey was a HUGE failure because of the following: Read More »»

Sydney To The Gong Bike Ride

As you would expect, I get requests to donate to charities all the time. I prefer to keep my philanthropic and charitable contributions private and confidential, but every once in a while something strikes me as unique or different in the approach, strategy or tactic used. Today’s post is a case in point. Dr Cary Fraser, a Sydney Eastern Suburb dentist with a dental practice based in Double Bay is going to squeeze into his cycling shorts and go the full 90 Kms… on the Sydney To The Gong Bike Ride — But that’s not what caught me eye.

It’s not that it’s a great charity that does exemplary work. Take a look at their donation page below – it’s brilliant. They SHOW you EXACTLY what each level of donation can do – That’s totally Exponential. I wanted to share that with you to motivate you to make your own personal donation to Dr Cary Fraser’s account or click here -> https://register.gongride.org.au/MS-Sydney-to-the-Gong-Bike-Ride/donate/caryfraser

Australian Engineering Week 2010

Tomorrow is the start of Australian Engineering Week 2010. As an engineer, Engineering Week brings back a lot of memories, most of them fuzzy for some reason…

Anyway, I thought I would remind you of it since Engineering Education Australia has an engineer’s blog for Australian Engineers amongst a wide variety of services.

I like their slogan “Make it so” – a tribute to Star Trek and the fact that engineers “make it so“. Click on a hyperlink and have a look around – I’m sure there must be something of interest if you’re an engineering or construction professional or technician OR if you have a son or daughter who one day aspires to join the engineering profession!

Rudd health care proposals

The Australian Medical Association has weighed in on the previous Rudd health care proposals.

The Allergists voted to scratch it, but the Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves.

The Gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought the Administration had a lot of nerve.

The Obstetricians felt they were all laboring under a misconception.

Ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted.

Pathologists yelled, “Over my dead body!” while the Pediatricians said, “Oh, Grow up!”

The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the Radiologists could see right through it.

Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing.

The Internists thought it was a bitter pill to swallow, and the

Plastic Surgeons said, “This puts a whole new face on the matter….”

The Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the Urologists were p#ssed off at the whole idea.

The Anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas, and the Cardiologists didn’t have the heart to say no.

In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to all the ####holes in Canberra.

1 New Blog Is Created Every Second

According to Virgin Blue’s Voyeur Magazine which was forwarded to me by Australia’s Gourmet Guardian, Gavin Buckett reveals that Technorati - the blogosphere’s preeminent source of truth revealed recently that 1 new blog is created every second. The article which you can read online by clicking on the previous hyperlink also reveals something about modern culture… Britney Spears has 4,335,952 Twitter followers to US President Barack Obama‘s one million and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd‘s paltry 2,125. Are they twitterers or just plain old twits?!?

One thing is for sure, as I’ve stated in previous blog posts- the world is changing – that includes blogging.

73% of bloggers now use Twitter – of course a lot of that is just Spam in a new can…

So what does that mean for you as a blogger?

If you’re not doing something special that adds value to readers, guess what? You’re ending up at the bottom of a proverbial pile that is so high/deep that almost no one’s going to find you or your blog.

Just having a blog is no longer enough. The rules have changed.

Rudd Gets The Red Card

Every once in a while there’s proof that people have a voice in government. I have to admit it all happened quickly and decisively. Let’s wish Julia Gillard the best of luck and success. Her challenge will be to become the first ELECTED female Prime Minister of Australia. A similar situation occurred in Canada with Kim Campbell in 1993, her fate was more or less decided on day one. Julia’s destiny is for her to determine and for us to decide.

The Australian Economy Explained

How our economy works:

It’s a slow day in Gulargumbone ( small place in Australia)

The sun is beating down, and the streets are deserted.

Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody lives on credit…..

On this particular day a rich tourist from Sydney is driving through town.

He stops at the motel and lays a $100 note on the desk saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one to spend the night.

As soon as the man walks upstairs, the owner grabs the $100 and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher.

The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer.

The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill at the supplier of feed and fuel.

The guy at the Farmer’s Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the local prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her “services” on credit.

The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the

hotel owner. The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the rich Traveler will not suspect anything.

At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, picks up the $100 note, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, pockets the money, and leaves town.

No one produced anything.

No one earned anything.

However, the whole town is now out of debt and now looks to the future with optimism.

New Airport Security And Airline Check-In Procedures

According to The Flying Book, 99.5% of all bags make it to their destination with their owners. Only 4.55 bags out of 1,000 are ‘lost’. Of the ones that are ‘lost’, 80% are retrieved within 24 hours, 99% within 5 days. The rest well… who knows!

Attention Australian passengers traveling to the United States: There are new airport security check-in procedures to consider.
